Walking through loss

Since 1988, October has been designated as Pregnancy & Infant Loss Awareness Month in the United States. Losing a child is one of the sharpest pains one can endure. As we sit across from men and women in our centers making pregnancy decisions, I’m reminded again and again that each of them is walking through loss. If they choose to carry and parent, most often it’s “too soon” or they “weren’t ready” and this decision requires them to dream differently about their future, giving up what they think they wanted. If they choose an abortion, they are faced with a tremendous loss that is often not realized until afterward, having given up what they think they didn’t want. For an expectant parent making an adoption plan, they are equally faced with a future they did not plan for and one that will require great bravery and a willingness to release something precious to them. As a woman who has lost children to miscarriage, I see all of this as loss and permission to grieve. Fortunately, we are never left alone in our grief… The loss of a child is tragic, but I believe God Himself wanted to connect with our loss by suffering the same loss of His child, on purpose, to show us just how tremendous His love is for us. What kind of God steps into humanity, sacrificing His own Son for us just so we can walk with Him? As you remember loved ones this month that have suffered pregnancy loss, by choice or circumstance, remember that He is faithful to endure grief and suffering with us.
2 Corinthians 1:3-5
“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ.”
