Jim Visser:
Stepping Into Fatherhood Ministry
HOW IT STARTED: During a weekly church coffee hour, Jim and a group of retired men often discussed cultural issues — abortion, adoption, politics, even the Lions. Over time, those conversations stirred something deeper in Jim. Rather than only talking about making a difference, he felt called to explore stepping into it – to help make a difference. He reached out to Positive Options, met with the team, and quickly connected with their mission of loving people before, during, and after a pregnancy decision. The commitment to treat every person with dignity and respect — made in the image of God — resonated with Jim’s heart. Jim joined a Positive Options education and training cohort focused on Compassion, Hope, and Help, gaining not just the “why,” but the “what” and “how” of serving well. After completing training, he began shadowing male advocates, learning firsthand how to walk alongside men and families with grace and truth.
HOW IT’s GOING: Today, Jim volunteers one afternoon each week at Positive Options in Holland, offering a listening ear, thoughtful questions, and encouraging emotional and spiritual support to men and expectant fathers. Reflecting on his experience, Jim shares, “Through my investment with Positive Options, I have gained greater insight into the complexities surrounding unplanned pregnancy and the options each individual process.” He adds, “Our clients don’t come in combative or demanding their rights — they are often unsure, sometimes scared, and looking for a caring environment where they can be seen, heard, and given truthful information.” The work has also shaped him personally: “I’ve been challenged to gain a deeper and more complete understanding of my own views — even my own heart. Each situation is unique and nuanced, and every person deserves to be heard, to have truth shared with them, and to feel the love of Christ.”
